AND since I already own TWO (woooooo) I figured I'd better get this right and do some research.
Well, if you've read about my Strat you know that the good metropolis of O-town is blessed with DOZENS and DOZENS of pawn shops.
SO, for 9 months I spent EVERY weekend scouring every pawn shop and every instrument store I could dig up within 6 counties.
Being rather 'small of stature" (yes that's short to most folks)
I found out that the GRANDS and the Concert bodied instruments
just didnt cut it. Being a Stingy SOB the Martins and the Taylors just
weren't conceivable.
But one thing I KEPT coming across was Ovations, they were smaller,
lighter, got GREAT reviews, and seem to litter the pawn shops like
grass on the ground.
HOWEVER, my local Mom n' Pop Shop had this Jay Turser, and from my Tele
search I already knew it would be good, I just never realized HOW good.
Mic was taking piano lessons from the store so every week I got to
spend at least an hour playing it.
And EVERY week I got closer and closer to IT being the one.
The BIG issue for me of course was the price.
It was marked at $429 (MSRP=$800), at the time it would be THE most
expensive guitar I'd ever bought! Now I know that in the realm of GOOD
acoustics $429 is NOT much, but for me, well I'm cheap. PLUS I had just
found an Ovation in a Pawn Shop for $300. It sounded GREAT (even with
only 5 strings), but as I had found with every OTHER ovation I'd tried,
it kept sliding off my damn LAP!
Well it turns out that this particular SQCE had some scratches in
the rosette around the soundhole, now I had been playing this for 6
months and I had never seen it, but the guy who owned the shop said
he'd knock $100 off because of the "damage.
Well a deal like THAT Mic couldnt pass up, combine THAT with my birthday and I was a VERY happy camper!
I certainly cant see any damage, can YOU?
